The roller coaster continues! Last night Dylan was moved from the cardiac ICU out onto the floor where he will stay until he is ready to go home. They put him into a little hospital gown and got him all set up in his new room. Not needing to be in the ICU anymore is of course a great milestone and we are so happy that he's doing so well.
The thing that is difficult at this stage is weaning him off of the morphine. Since it is a narcotic, babies become dependent on it if they are on it for 5-7 days. If Dylan would have moved out of the ICU sooner it would not be an issue. They could have just turned it off within the course of a day and moved to other non-narcotic pain killers. But Dylan's stay in the ICU was longer than any of us were anticipating.
Up until today his body had been handling the process of slowly weaning just fine. But today we dealt with one of the signs of withdrawal. Dylan couldn't go to sleep all day long. He was so tired by the afternoon, but literally couldn't fall asleep. So I held him for about 3 hours, crying off and on, trying to help him. Finally at 4:00 pm he was able to fall asleep with a feeding and another dose of morphine. I hope that he is able to sleep tonight. We will see if the doctors decide to slow down the weaning based on what happened today or not. It is progress, it's just not very fun progress.
On to another day!

We are happy he is on the floor now and out of the ICU. Dylan, you are in our prayers.
