We went to see Dylan's cardiologist today. It was good to talk about what lies ahead for all of us. Dylan continues to gain weight....6 ounces in the last week. They did an EKG today, which is a test that uses about 10 sensors stuck to him and measures various things with his heart. The doctor thought that Dylan looked good and so now we can get rid of his equipment! No more oxygen and no more oximeters! It is so nice to walk around the house with him like a normal baby without him being connected to anything.
As far as what we are expecting in the future, he will have open heart surgery some time in the summer. Today is the first time Justin and I really began to understand what open heart surgery means. The procedure will last for 5-6 long hours, and Dylan will be in the hospital for 7-10 days following, if all goes well and there aren't any problems. It will take him at least 6 weeks to fully recover from the surgery, especially the healing of the breast bone where they will open up his chest cavity to get at his little heart. As I contemplate this next step in Dylan's life, I just have to take a deep breath. It will be a trying time for us, but we are so thankful that we have a great support network to help us through.
We are so grateful for medical technology and that there is a surgery that can heal Dylan's heart. If the surgery goes well, Dylan has the potential to catch up with other kids his age, be able to run around with his siblings and have a normal childhood. As we get an operation date, we will be sure to post it.
P.S. It is strange to think that tomorrow is my original due date. Happy 6 week birthday Dylan!

Those eyes! It is almost like he knows what is coming, but is full of trust and love...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he's doing well and is off the equipment! I now have 6 weeks left, so it's crazy to think of having him now. It really makes you thankful for modern medicine...
