Emergency Room

This last week we have had some sickness going around the family. Unfortunately, Dylan caught it from his siblings. By the time he had reached his fifth day being sick I took him in to see his pediatrician. The doctor was concerned that Dylan was getting dehydrated and was labored in his breathing. Babies with heart conditions are at a higher risk of having cardiac distress when they are sick, especially if it makes it hard for them to breathe or for their heart to get oxygen out to the body. The doctor told me to go directly to the ER up at Seattle Children's with Dylan.

We got there and they did a chest x-ray to see Dylan's lungs. He was seen by three separate doctors by the end of the night. They were afraid that he had pneumonia. There was some unidentified gunk in his lungs in the x-ray. They also wanted to make sure that Dylan was able to get re-hydrated. So that meant that we had to force feed him pedialite and formula. Although this was a difficult process and one that Dylan didn't like (he just wanted to go to sleep, he was so tired!) it was better than the alternative - putting an IV in to get fluids to his body.

Finally they were satisfied with how much fluid he took in and issued a prescription to take care of his ear infection, his goopey eyes and whatever was in his lungs. We made it home again just before midnight. What an exhausting night it was. But we are so thankful that we have some great hospitals here and that the doctors that take care of Dylan are very conscious of his heart and take great care of him. Today he was back to his happy, curious self, which was so nice to see.

Below is a picture of us trying to feed Dylan peas. So far the favorite, but the most success we have had with baby food is about 7-8 bites. We still have a ways to go to get this boy off of a bottle!

Today Dylan was evaluated again for his development and will qualify for an in-home therapist. We hope that once these meetings get going that he will really see some great progress!
