Dylan Becomes a Big Brother

Meet baby Weston. We are so thankful that he is here safe and sound and that we did not have all the drama that accompanied Dylan's entrance into this world. As you can see from the picture, Dylan is pretty excited to be a big brother (and he still is.....Weston is 4 weeks old today)!

As promised, here is the update on Weston's little heart. It turns out that these boys have something in common.....they were both born with a congenital heart defect. They both get to see the same cardiologist, and over the summer they will have a joint appointment. After Weston was born, the doctors could hear a heart murmur. They did an ECHO on his heart before we left the hospital, but it wasn't until our appointment this week with the cardiologist that we got all of the information. The nurse took a few different blood pressures on different limbs (no, Weston didn't like that) and she did an EKG. Weston really didn't like that! But we finally were able to get an accurate reading after he had exhausted himself and cried himself to sleep.

Weston has a VSD......or a Ventricular Septal Defect, otherwise known as a hole in the heart. Dylan also had a hole in his heart, in addition to 3 other defects. Weston's hole is small and right now is not affecting the function on his heart, which is great news! There is a chance that it will close up on its own in the next year or two. But if it doesn't, then hopefully it will remain small and not cause any problems down the road. We will go back in 3 months to check on things. Small holes in infants are quite noisy and Weston's definitely is. I got a chance to listen to Dylan's heart murmur once, and it sounded like a dishwasher. So now we have two boys with noisy hearts!

We are so thankful that Weston's heart defect is not a big problem like Dylan's was. And we are so thankful that his heart is working well and that his body is getting the oxygen it needs.

And finally, we are once again reminded of how precious life is and how amazing it is to have a healthy baby. All babies are such miracles and we are so humbled to have been blessed with another beautiful boy.

Merry Christmas!

  1. That's the same thing Caroline has. Hers is fairly large and they doctor thought they would need to do surgery, but then decided that was not necessary. Other than regular check ups, it does not seem to affect her at all. Hopefully Weston's will be the same!
